History

Uttarakhand is known for the nature of the Himalayas, the Bhadar, and the Terai. 86 percent of the total area is covered by mountains and 65 percent is covered by forest. Mountains provide a unique habitat for animals and vegetation. What a recreation for humans who live and visits this place? Most of the northern part of the state was covered by Himalayan peaks and glaciers. These glaciers originate from the two most important rivers Gangotri and Yamunotri, which are fed by the myriad lakes, glacier melts, and streams. What a view it would be to see the river flowing? Why visit any foreign country to see the snow-cap Mountain and Valley.

The lush green forest and mountain not only provide fresh air but also host the Bengal tiger in Jim Corbett National Park, the oldest national park. Kids will love this place. The valley of flowers, in the upper expanses of Bhyundar Ganga which has a variety of flowers and plants is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Who would want to miss this site? The model "Forest Circles" around Dehradun are used for training, demonstrating, and scientific measurements that have a huge influence on the forest and the ecology of the region.

Culture and Heritage

Uttarakhand means Northern land. This name is derived from Sanskrit. And it is also mentioned in early Hindu scriptures as the combined land of Kedarkhand and Manaskhand (present-day Garhwal and Kumaon). It is also known as Devabhumi meaning the land of God. It has numerous Hindu temples and pilgrimage centers found throughout the state. And it is also believed, sage Vyasa scripted the Hindu epic here. Not just Hinduism, Folk Hindu Shamanic was also practiced here.

Out of many art forms that existed here intricate wooden carvings appear more frequently in the decorated temples in Uttarakhand. Paintings and Murals were used to decorate homes and temples. Out of the painting forms Pahari painting and Kangra paintings mainly flourished. While the Kumaoni art form was geometrical in nature and the Garhwali art form is known for its closeness to nature. Handcrafted golden jewelry, basketry, and knitting also existed.
