Yamunotri consists of a number of Hindu pilgrimage sites
that are highly revered. Yamunotri is considered to be the birthplace of the Yamuna
River. Yamunotri is set in the Garhwal
Himalayas. It is set amidst some breathtaking surroundings and is one of the most
popular religious sites in India. It is a major tourist attraction as well.
Yamunotri is located in the state of Uttarakhand within the Tehri Garhwal
region. It is popularly believed that Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River.
The Champasar Glacier is the point of descendants of the Yamuna River. Numerous
glaciers as well as hot water springs are also present in Yamunotri. According
to an old legend, it is believed that Yamunotri was the place of residence of
the revered sage named Asit Muni.
Hanuman Chatti is located at a distance of 13 kilometers
from Yamunotri.
How to Reach Yamunotri:
We can reach Yamunotri by air very easily. The Jolly Grant
airport is situated in close proximity to Yamunotri, located at a distance of
70 kilometers from the place. Yamunotri is also easily accessible through the railhead. The Rishikesh railway station is the nearest railhead located at a
distance of about 222 kilometers from Yamunotri via Haridwar and Narendra Nagar.
A number of tourist permit vehicles can also be made available. Yamunotri does
not have any straight road through which we can access it. A bus can however be
taken from Rishikesh, Uttarkashi, Barkot, Gangotri, Dehradun as well as
Haridwar for Hanuman Chatti. From there palanquins and ponies have to be hired
as a distance of approximately 14 kilometres has to be trekked.

Yamunotri Temple

It is one of the
major tourist attractions of the place. Maharani Gularia from the city of
Jaipur constructed the temple around the 19th century. Since then the temple
has been destroyed about 2 times. a major earthquake destroyed it for the first
time in the year 1923. It was again damaged in the year 1982. The temple was
constructed as a dedication to the
sacred river Yamuna. The source of the river is located at a distance of 1
kilometer from the temple. This place consists of a number of interesting
legends. The Yamunotri temple is situated about 3235 meters above the level
of sea. The temple is only 6 kilometers under the glacier. An idol of
Yamuna decorated with garlands is housed by the temple.

The Surya Kund is a sacred hot water pool where the Prasad
is prepared and offered to the deity. Cloth bags are used to contain the Prasad
which is a combination of potatoes as well as rice.
Divya Shila

The literal meaning of Divya Shila is a heavenly
or blessed rock. This rock pillar is worshipped and only then the entry to
the Yamunotri temple is allowed.
